The Adventure of Research

Research is terribly underestimated.

While, it is used as a tool to get to an end result, when the end result is all that is in mind, we lose out on the opportunity to grow from the process of this thing called research.

Research is defined as “the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.” Without it, we are inclined to stay the same… all the time.

We like to apply research to areas of study such as science or history while failing to realize that life in and of itself is a systematic investigation.

There is no glory in research, and as humans we tend to eschew those things that don’t have glory attached to them. If we were to realize the role that it plays, however, in the larger scheme of things, research would be treated with much more intricacy.

One example that comes to mind is with a job search. Researching a potential job seems like a one track, somewhat simple endeavor. Especially when we know what we want to the end result to be. Even the beginning of a resume states the reason and/or our desired result in applying for the job.

At times, that is all that is on our mind…. the perceived glory, the landing of that desired position. The time and research it took to understand what we want to do, locate the position, and even the ability to communicate what it is we want to do on paper is a dire oversight.

All the while elevating this coveted position, we fail to realize the unveiling of our current condition in the process. Have you ever realized that after being rejected from something, a change occurs? Whether it’s in our hearts, our heads, or the atmosphere cannot be determined all the time, but a definite shift happens. It is the shift of our condition. If we were in one mindset before the adventure of research begins, the journey has a way of causing us to broaden our mental horizons as we reach the other side.

Has this ever happened to you? Share an example of how searching out the matter of a thing (in study or in life) has helped to change the way you see things.
