When news of this virus first broke amidst my husband being called upon to go on a trip that would lead him to the East from the states, I paid attention. When it started spreading at an uncontrollable rate, I paid attention. When they started quarantining, I prayed.
When we found out that our community was the epicenter of the first death in the United States due to this virus, not just I, but we, my husband and I waited… at home. When we saw the numbers climbing, we prepared… at home.
This has been and is our position now: paying attention, praying, and preparing. While it may not have been an expected position just one month ago, it has so far been ours.
However, as we continue in this (pay, pray, prepare) cycle, we are noticing that this “position” is slowly being robbed from us and becoming more of a “condition.”
The difference is subtle but requires attention. To have position is usually something gained, a status if you will, that allows for a certain level of autonomy. The rule we have in a position is up to us. A condition however dictates our status. It sets limits upon us and tells us where to and where not to go, what or what not to do.
The more we, together with our community, behave in a way that promotes the spread of this virus, the more and more restrictions we are and will find placed upon us… by external powers, not of our own free will. A condition. On the other hand the more we set proper guidelines for our household and family, yes, our community, the less we have to worry about these outside restrictions.
While the spread of this virus is something that we ought not to ignore and take precautions for, the result that comes from us choosing to ignore it thus far has had the potential for consequences that we will not be able to undo well into the future. The goal is to stay in position.
