So… What is AI?
Well, “A” stands for artificial and “I” stands for intellegence. It was made to be intellegent according to man’s specifications. While there is real intellegence that human beings have been endowed with, this artificial version can be useful in today’s educational landscape.
When we find our kids asking to use artificial intellegence, we can think of it very similiar to them asking to watch TV or play video games. In response to this we might ask, “Have you finished your homework ?” or maybe “Have you done your chores?” In seeking to watch a movie we might ask or encourage them to read the book first. If they ask us what is two plus two, we might ask them, “What do YOU think?” before answering.
We do this as parents so that they can let their own minds to think through things. Something that has been underrated for a very long time–critical thinking. We do not want them to be overwhelmed with someone else’s vision, analysis, or otherwise “intellegence” on the subject matter. Suprisingly, that can include even our own thoughts and biases.
The Latin root of this word intellegēns can be understood as the word “discerning”. And if you are willing to seek out the biblical connection the word there is a ton of scripture on the subject (https://www.openbible.info/topics/discernment). How do we cultivate intellegence, real intellegence in a world that is turning more and more to artificial answers? We can more than cope with this reality by asking intellengent or descerning questions. Coming with depth. In the grand scheme of things there is plenty of time for this.
Let’s encourage our kids to think through things, ask intellegent questions, and in all of their getting, to get understanding. Then maybe AI can help.
My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. – Prov. 2:1-5
