True or false: “If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself!”
It’s something we’ve all heard and possibly even said a time or two. This phrase is loaded with willpower isn’t it?
But really, when it comes to willpower, which comes first? It has to be either will or power.
Whenever it was decided that the two should come together in the form of one single word, “willpower”, it was decided that the impossible is possible with mental acumen and fortitude alone.
This cannot be, as will and power are two very different things:
Will is defined as “the mental faculty by which one deliberately chooses or decides upon a course of action”…
Power is defined as “the ability to do something or act in a particular way, especially as a faculty or quality”…
Power is ability and can certainly drive will, as it can drive many things… but never the other way around. Will cannot drive power, not the real kind.
Will can, however, invite power into a situation. Matters of the will where this is most effective include areas of decision such as:
Prioritizing: Putting first things first. This does not take any special power, but it does invite power to be on our side when things are done orderly.
Circumstances: Usually the outcome of something great happens against or will, in circumstances we have no control over. Most of us need circumstance to propel our will into alignment with power.
These are just two major areas of our will that truly decide whether power can play a role or not.
When things goes array (trying to obtain power through mere “will” or fortitude) we tend to give up too easily. Other than our fluctuating will, there’s really nothing steady to guide us.
Think of it this way… Power is God’s will. What He ordains or desires to happen is going to be done anyway.
Will is just that. Left to its own devices it will flow any which way.
There is only one way to get things done the right way… and it’s not by just doing it ourselves.
